BERTRAND RUSSELL AND P. STRAWSON THEORY AND DESCRIPTIONS

 

In the notion of theory of description, two philosophers also present their different arguments towards the development of language. Bertrand Russell offers the idea that definite description in language, it involves a quantifier and a predicate, and also it involves logical analysis of sentences containing definite descriptions. In short, Russell viewed description as incomplete symbols that should be analyzed logically to eliminate any references to nonexistent.

The second idea of description offers to us the idea that there is distinction between “descriptive” and “singular” reverences. He emphasizes the importance of ordinary language and his critiques of certain philosophical traditions, offers to us by the past philosopher. Because of this different notion, Strawson’s critique the notion of Russells, that it offers impact on philosophy of language leading to a broader recognition of the importance of definite description in communication. The idea of two philosophers shapes the idea of theory of descriptions.

But for some reason I think that the best idea that offers reality towards the theory of description, is the idea offers to us by Russell, why? It is because he tries to avoid those non-existential idea that leads to doubting and it is not existence. We must consider to always put reality towards every language we use, because if we just put the non-existence it is more complicated and vaguer for us to understand. We cannot deny the fact that if we try to evaluate our language it must be leads us to reality.

            But we should also consider some arguments that we cannot fully identify the reality on every language we have, we can only avoid or disregard those defected ones but we cannot fully erase it in some cases. We should be mindful in our language used, it must be logical in order to show reality based on the given format of description. Lastly, Russell’s theory imposes strict existence and if it fails the condition, the sentences will leads to absurdity. Absurdity, I mean that sentence will no longer meaningful because they use defected ones in the sentences they have.
