FREGE THEORY OF REFERENCE
Theory of
reference has a big role in the development of language in the context of
philosophy, two of the philosophers present different notion when theory of
references was introduce. In the theory of Gottlob Frege, he argued that the
meaning of linguistic expression is compose of both sense and its reference,
concerned with singular term as definite description. In short, Frege’s theory
emphasizes the distinction of sense and reference as a medium for logical
analysis of language.
Charles Peirce
on the other side, presents the notion of semiotics and pragmatism that he
believed, signs acquire their meaning through their use and context. He
includes the concept of firstness, secondness and thirdness which opens the
understanding of signs and reference. In short, his notion is more semiotic and
pragmatic that focuses on different modes of reference.
In presenting
different notion of theory of reference, I come up with this idea that I think
and most commonly and accepted idea of reference is the offer presented by
Charles Peirce. I think that the idea of pragmatism and semiotics, can help us
to acquire different notion presented by different facts and signs. Peirce
declare that signs acquire their meaning through their use and context can
leads us to the truth value of sentences. Signs in semiotics can deceive us also. We
cannot fully grasp the idea of semiotics in different views, it must be
universal in order to prove it right. Senses can help us also by leading us to
the factual sense, our sense can be our source of acquiring knowledge and
formulating ideas that can be put in sentences. But we cannot deny the fact
that senses has no assurance for us to conclude a certain facts, a facts can be
doubted also because senses offers different point of views and senses can
deceive us also.
But one thing I
realize that Peirce’s theory just offer us not a full guarantee in the truth
value of sentence but he gave us understanding to look beyond a specific and
traditional way of acquiring knowledge.
